What Is a Concrete Pool Deck Installation?
A pool deck has to do three jobs that an ordinary patio does not: stay grippy when it is soaking wet, stay cool enough to walk on barefoot in August, and go in without harming the pool structure it wraps around. Everything about how we build them comes back to those three requirements.
Liner protection comes first. Before any concrete arrives, the liner track and coping are boarded and shielded, and the deck edge is formed so nothing bears on the pool wall. Vinyl liners are easy to nick and expensive to replace, and there is no reason for it to happen during a deck pour.
Then the surface. We use non-slip broom finishes, exposed aggregate, or a smoother finish with a slip-resistant polymer worked into the sealer. Colour matters more than most homeowners expect: a charcoal deck can become genuinely uncomfortable underfoot on a hot afternoon, so we steer pool surrounds toward sand, cream and pale grey tones.
Finally, drainage. The deck is graded so rinse water and rain run away from the waterline rather than carrying grit back into the pool, with an isolation joint between the deck and the pool structure so the two can move independently through a Toronto winter.

Common Problems We Solve
Slippery Decks
Smooth trowelled concrete around a pool is a hazard. Retexturing an existing deck with a broom-finish overlay, or adding a slip-resistant polymer to the sealer, restores grip without a full replacement.
Cracking Along the Pool Edge
Where a deck was poured hard against the pool structure with no isolation joint, seasonal movement cracks the concrete along the coping line. Cutting in a proper isolation joint during resurfacing stops that recurring.
Heaved or Settled Sections
Backfill around a pool is rarely compacted as well as the rest of the yard, so deck sections settle. If the concrete is sound, polyurethane foam lifting raises it back to grade without excavation, which matters when the alternative is jackhammering next to a liner.
Sun-Faded and Stained Surfaces
Chlorine, sunscreen, leaf tannins and UV all take their toll. A decorative overlay with a UV-stable sealer resets the appearance at a fraction of replacement cost when the slab underneath is level and solid.
How Much Does a Pool Deck Cost in Toronto?
Pool decks run $12 to $20 per square foot, higher than a standard patio because of the liner protection, edge detailing and non-slip finish work. Cost drivers:
- Shape. Radius decks around a kidney or freeform pool take far more forming labour than a rectangle.
- Finish. Broom is standard, exposed aggregate and stamped patterns add to the rate.
- Access. Fenced backyards without truck access need line-pump or wheelbarrow placement.
- Existing conditions. Removing an old deck, or working around established landscaping, adds site work.
- Colour and sealer. Integral colour and UV-stable sealers cost more than a plain grey pour.
A 600 sq ft surround therefore lands roughly between $7,200 and $12,000.
Types of Pool Deck Finish
Exposed aggregate is the best-performing surface around water: the revealed stone breaks the water film and gives grip barefoot. Broom finish is the value option and performs nearly as well. Stamped patterns in ashlar slate or cut stone read as natural material and, with a slip additive in the sealer, work well provided the pattern is not so deep it traps water. Light integral colour in sand or pale grey is worth specifying regardless of texture, purely for surface temperature.
When Should a Pool Deck Be Replaced?
Replace when the slab has cracked through with vertical displacement, when settlement has pulled the deck away from the coping, or when the base around the pool has washed out. Resurface when the deck is level and solid but slippery, stained, or simply dated. Lift when the concrete is intact and only out of level.
